Spirit-Wise Women

December 23, 2018

On this fourth Sunday of Advent, Luke invites us to listen in and observe the encounter between pregnant mothers Elizabeth (John the Baptist) and Mary (Jesus).

This divine – human story celebrates women and mothers bringing their creativity to God’s movement for change.  There’s no marginalizing of women’s stories here.  The roles of women in pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing aren’t romanticized here.

As Luke sees it, holiness is not the business of men alone.  Remember Zechariah, John’s father?  Luke tells us his unbelief left him silenced.  But the women, Elizabeth and Mary, willing and able to interpret events of their lives as connected to God – not only speak – they sing.

At our 9:30 A.M., Sunday worship, in prayer, Word, song, sermon and Meal, we can recover our ability to interpret the persons, events and experiences of our lives as involving the desires, presence and activities of a God who looks, loves and gives life.
