Feeding of the 5,000

July 29, 2018

Beginning this Sunday, and for four additional weeks, we’ll hear from the 6th chapter of John’s Gospel.  We begin with the feeding of the 5,000.

This new feeding thing is the only miracle reported in all four Gospels.  That’s reason enough to spend five weeks – today and the next four Sundays – breaking open John’s 6th chapter to ensure we get as much nourishment from it as possible.  There’s more.

John’s details both beg us to ask questions about ourselves and permit us to make statements about the God Jesus reveals.

Each week Jesus enters our lives by the means of grace, the Word spoken and heard.  The meal’s bread broken and wine poured are offered to us and we consume it.  Energized by this Word, fortified by this meal, we get to see ourselves as active parts of the Body; doing ministry in the name of Jesus, seeing church as not only an opportunity to receive, but also a movement where each one’s gifts and abilities can be used for others.

At our 9:30 A.M., worship, in prayer, Word, song, sermon and Meal, we’ll consider, again, the kind of creating, saving, and blessing opportunities God equips us to bring forth as we keep living Christ’s love within a changing world!
